Library Advisory Board

On April 20, 1987 the Council adopted resolution 715 establishing a Library Advisory Board, delineating the duties of the board, providing that members thereof shall receive no compensation and establishing the terms of the members.


On December 4, 1989 the Council adopted Ordinance 472 which amended the Avondale Municipal Code relating to the establishment of the Library Advisory Board.


Members serve three-year terms and are appointed by the Avondale City Council.

Powers and Duties of the Board

The Board shall:

- Promote the interests of the city’s libraries

- Coordinate fundraising activities to enhance the use of the city’s libraries

- Educate the community regarding planned giving


Statement of Ethics
            Board members must promote a high level of library service while observing ethical standards.

            
            Board members must avoid situations in which personal interests might be served or financial benefits gained at the expense of library users, colleagues or the institution. 
          
          
            It is incumbent upon any Board member to disqualify him or herself immediately whenever the appearance of a conflict of interest exists.


            Board members must distinguish clearly between their actions and statements reflecting their personal philosophies and attitudes and those of the institution, acknowledging the formal position of the Board even if they personally disagree.

            
            Board members must respect the confidential nature of library business while being aware of and in compliance with applicable laws governing freedom of information.

            
            Board members must be prepared to support to the fullest the efforts of librarians in responding to issues of censorship of library materials by groups or individuals.

            
              Board members may not represent the Board in any official capacity except as provided for in the Bylaws or as such authority is granted and approved by the Board at a regular or special meeting of the Board.


            Board members shall not receive a salary or other compensation for services as a Board member, except for travel and other expense reimbursements. Board members may participate in library activities available to all library staff.
