In April of 2004, Avondale
was the first city in the state to become a City of Character, as part of the
Character First! initiative. This is just another step that Avondale
is taking to build a better, safer and healthier community for its residents.
Avondale’s City of Character initiative seeks to:
- Foster character growth within the city organization and
throughout the community
- Heighten awareness of what good character is
- Help individuals and
organizations take responsibility for their personal character growth.
The City promotes Character First! throughout the
city organization in a number of ways:
- New employees are introduced to Character First! at each
New Employee Orientation.
- Character First! is incorporated as a component of the
City’s various policy-specific training, including ethics, prevention of
workplace harassment, discrimination, and violence, information
technology, procurement, and other appropriate policy and procedure
issues.
- Monthly workshops are held to highlight a specific
Character Trait – for example, Alertness, Attentiveness,
Trustworthiness, Responsibility – with discussions on how that specific
character trait is related to job performance and/or customer service.
- The City has launched a Character Recognition Program
which recognizes the good character traits of our residents.
