Avondale’s Public Works Department announces the second annual Holiday Used Cooking Oil Drive! The City of Avondale has teamed up with Tera Verde Biofuel for the recycling program at no cost to the city and its residents. Avondale was the first West Valley city to pilot a program like this. The goal of the campaign is to reduce the amount of sewer blockages and overflows caused by fats, oils, and grease (FOG) disposed of down the drain by residents.

Anyone who has ever had their driver’s license suspended can attest to the difficulties that may arise as a result, such as being unable to get to and from a job or driving a child to school or a sick parent to medical appointments. The Avondale City Court is seeking to raise awareness of its Compliance Assistance Program. Modeled after a program that was launched by the Phoenix Municipal Court last year, the program in Avondale is designed to help individuals resolve past traffic dues that are owed to the court that may be preventing the reinstatement of their Arizona Driver’s license.

Debbie Ray of the Avondale Police Department is reaching the West Valley’s youngest citizens with lessons in kindness to animals, people, and the environment. Debbie received her Certified Humane Education Specialist credential from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and is now part of the national Humane Education Registry. She is at this time, the only civilian in law enforcement to hold this credential in the state of Arizona.

The city is encouraging everyone to Save the Date, and get involved! The city is seeking parade entries, festival exhibitors and vendors, business sponsors, community partners and volunteers.

The Avondale Police Department's Annual "Shop with a Cop" holiday shopping spree is scheduled for Saturday, December 10, 2016. Since its inception, Avondale’s Shop with a Cop program has touched the lives of more than 250 children, creating a wonderful holiday experience for those who have been victims of a crime. The Avondale Police Department is able to provide this opportunity to approximately 25 - 30 youth every year, thanks in part to the contributions from area residents and businesses.

Former Avondale educator Belen Moreno will be Grand Marshal of the Billy Moore Days Parade, the City of Avondale announced this week. Following a seven-year hiatus, the popular community festival known as Billy Moore Days will return to Avondale Oct. 21, 22, and 23. Avondale’s Neighborhood & Family Services Department is collecting backpack and school supply donations before the next academic year. Each year Avondale distributes hundreds of backpacks filled with supplies, to students in grades Pre-K-8 who are in need that live in the communities of Avondale, Goodyear and Litchfield Park. To help local students start the year right, Avondale is asking for school supply donations.

Avondale’s much-anticipated renovation of Friendship Park begins on June 20, 2016, resulting in the park’s closure through early September. The extensive park project will provide more parking; improve ingress and egress into the park; enhanced open spaces and sports fields; more family picnic areas; a new restroom and renovation of an existing restroom, and a new 1800 square foot splash pad.

The City of Avondale’s Development and Engineering Services Department kicks off a new program to facilitate “speed-to-market” processes for the business and development community, as well as residents. Beginning the week of Oct. 21, the Department will launch the Over the Counter Plan Reviews program, which covers most minor plan submissions. Applicants will receive same-day review, approval and permits for plans that previously may have taken up to three weeks.
